For All Practical Purposes: Statistics

This 5-part video series on introductory statistical topics is only available from the Audio Visual Services Office.  The videos, which are between 25 and 28 minutes in length, are described below:

1.  Overview

The first program introduces the major themes of statistics: collecting data, organizing and picturing data, and drawing conclusions from data.  Bias and randomness are presented by looking at formal and informal public opinion polls and by examining a major medical experiment.  (28:00 minutes)

2.  Behind the Headlines

Takes a deeper look at data collection and explores how surveys and public opinion polls actually work.  (27:00 minutes)

3.  Picture This

Focuses on exploratory data analysis, emphasizing that the human eye and brain are the best known devices to see and recognize patterns.  Beginning with one variable, histograms, medians,  quartiles, and the concept of an outlier are introduced.   (25:00 minutes)

4.  Place Your Bets

Analyzes how long-term patterns of chance events can be predicted by looking at the operation of a gambling casino.  (25:00 minutes)

5.  Confident Conclusions

Explores the concept of confidence interval and describes precisely what opinion polls do and do not reveal.  (28:00 minutes)
