The Center for Astrostatistics is
an interdisciplinary center to serve the astronomy
and statistics communities
world wide, in part through a multifaceted
Web site. The cross-disciplinary
center's main mission is to bring
advances in statistics, including both long standing
and novel
methods, into the toolbox of
astronomy and astrophysics. It is an ongoing service
and outreach center for the research communities.
The goals include:
- promoting
applications and appropriate use of statistical thinking, practice,
and data analysis in astronomy; and
- supporting the growth
and development of interaction
between the two research communities through series of workshops.
This effort complements
the recent NSF focused research
award to Professor G. J. Babu,
supporting National Virtual Observatory-oriented
research.
Web activities include
the maintenance of a highly
popular StatCodes site
providing links to statistical codes and services
on the Web, and a metasite archive
of
annotated links to selected methodological articles
in astronomical
and statistical literature applicable to
astronomy. The site also will
include research updates, informal reports by the center's
associates, and training handbooks produced
for the annual on-site workshops and tutorials.
