| The
Center for Likelihood Studies was established
in 1992, inaugurated during an IMS special
topics meeting titled "Variations on the Likelihood
Theme." The Center is directed by Dr. Bruce
Lindsay, Willaman Professor of Statistics, and
is housed in a suite of offices at 422 Thomas Building.
The center's main objective is to
foster a creative and interactive environment for
students
and faculty sharing a common interest in the area
of likelihood theory and methods.
Since its inception research funding
for many students has been provided through research
grants from NSF, NSA, and EPA. The Director supervised
eleven students to Ph.D.s in the period 1992 to 2000.
In spring 2001, he supervised eight
Ph.D. students and two postdoctoral students.
In 2000 the Center added a new focus for research
-- genometrics. The level of student and faculty
interest in this field, the application of statistics
to
genomics
problems,
had reached a critical mass. In
Spring 2001 the center's director supervised
four Ph.D. students in this area, in
conjunction
with other interested junior faculty.
