First Year

Fall Semester

Most incoming students take STAT 511, 513 and 597C Introduction to Computing Environments. Many students take STAT 480, an introduction to statistical computing packages. The remaining three credits could be another statistics courses such as STAT 464 Applied Nonparametric Statistics.

Other courses taken depend on student interest:

  • Students with a computing interest might take a computer science course, such as CSE 451 or 455, courses in numerical computations and matrix computations.
  • Students with a biostatistics interest might take an introductory biostatistics course; a course in biomedical sciences such as MICROB 400 Introductory Environmental Microbiology, or BIOL 428 Population Genetics.
  • Students with a statistical ecology interest might take a relevant course in environmental and ecological programs.
  • Students interested in the dual degree in Statistics and Operations Research might take a course in linear or dynamic programming in the College of Engineering or Smeal College of Business.

Spring Semester

Students continue with STAT 512, 514, and 515. Students will then take the master's qualifying exam shortly after the end of the spring semester.

Summer Session

Most students use this period to take a topics course in statistics and perhaps a course outside the department in an area of interest that complements their area of emphasis.

Second Year

Students generally take three courses per semester, plus STAT 580 Statisical Consulting Practicum. These courses can be a mixture of statistics courses and elective courses from other areas that fit into areas of interest and emphasis. Statistics courses in year two typically are selected from the following: STAT 503, 505, 506, 510, 524, 525, 540, and 544.

In the second year, the student must also begin the master's paper or thesis. This is on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with his or her advisor. Often the paper is completed in the spring semester prior to graduation, or the second summer.
