Distinguished Professor of Mathematical Statistics
and Environmental Statistics
Ph.D.: University of Michigan, 1959
D.Sc.: Indian Statistical Institute, 1975.
Statistical ecology and environmental statistics provide the focus of Dr. Patil's research at the Center for Statistical Ecology and Environmental Statistics in the Department of Statistics. The emphasis is on individual and collaborative research, training, and exposition on improving the quantification and communication of man's impact on the environment with special attention to renewable resources and their habitats. The interest also lies in statistical investigations of the impact of the environment on man.

Broad research areas of our interest relate to statistical ecology, environmental statistics, and quantitative risk analysis with emphasis on mathematical statistics, statistical methodology, and data interpretation for future use. The adopted approach is to advance statistics for ecology and environment, and to advance ecological and environmental theory and practice using valid statistics.

Current research projects and activities include spatial statistics, multi-scale assessment, composite sampling, encountered data and meta-analysis, ranked set sampling, biodiversity and community analysis using multivariate methods, superfund site characterization and evaluation, and statistical distributions in scientific work.

Dr. Patil is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics; an elected member of the International Statistical Institute; and a recipient of the distinguished statistical ecologist award of the International Association for Ecology, and of the Best Research Paper Award of the American Fisheries Society. He is past chair of the ASA section on Statistics and the Environment, and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Environmental Statistics.
