form)
What is the Statistics Major?
The statistics major in Penn State's Eberly College of Science helps
prepare students for careers in business, industry, and government,
and for further graduate study in statistics. Students who choose
statistics generally have interests in mathematics, computation, and
the quantitative aspects of science.
Why Statistics at Penn State?
The statistics program at Penn State provides training in mathematics,
computation, database management, and statistical analysis. These
skills are in great demand in industry and government. Research divisions
in the pharmaceutical industry, quality control and quality engineering
divisions in manufacturing companies, corporate planning and analysis
units, and other data-intensive divisions recruit students with an
undergraduate major in statistics.
In order to meet these varied needs, the statistics program at Penn
State offers several options within the major:

ADVISING
NOTES:
In addition to the above requirements, each student must complete three
credits of intercultural and international competence (GI); a first-year
seminar; and three credits of writing across the curriculum (W suffix).
The writing across the curriculum requirement is satisfied for statistics
majors by STAT 470W. We recommend but do not require that statistics
students take the statistics first-year seminar during the fall of their
first year at Penn State.
Students
may petition to substitute three credits of GS, GA, or GH for three credits
of another of GS, GA, or GH. This substitution is often referred to as
the 3-6-9 sequence (as opposed to the 6-6-6 sequence in GS, GA, GH
shown above).
