Summer internship opportunities with Eli Lilly
Bruce, Jim:
Eli Lilly is proud to announce its opportunities for 2008
summer internships within the statistics department. In order to
match qualified students with projects that interest them, I have
included descriptions of the 4 summer internship projects for 2008.
Would you please advertise these to the Penn State graduate
students?
Project title: Evaluation of surrogate markers in the
presence of measurement error
Description: Surrogate markers are important for post-launch
commercialization of medicines, as it could be use as an early indicator
to see whether a drug is effective in treating disease for a
patient. Recently, several methods were developed from an
information theory perspective (Alonso and Molenberghs, 2007; Qu and Case
2007). However, the effect of measurement error on evaluating surrogate
markers was not incorporated. It could be misleading as most biomarkers
are subject to large measurement errors. This project is intended to use
simulation extrapolation (Cook and Stefanski, 1994) to adjust for the
bias in the quantities derived from information theory due to the
measurement error.
Project title: Statistical models for count data with
high proportion of zeros
Description: We are often presented with count
data with a large number of zeroes. These data sets are difficult
to model with standard analyses. Various methods for count data,
including hurdle model have been considered. This internship would
explore this area including using SAS proc NLMIXED fitting various model
for count data (ZIP, hurdle, negative binomial, etc); clinical
interpretation of hurdle model; and recommendations for an optimal model
for different level of zero counts through simulations.
Project title: Meta Analysis for Titan Project.
Description: Titan is a major project in the Elanco Animal Health
business. More than 10 efficacy studies have been conducted in the past 3
years. A meta analysis of the efficacy data will be performed in order to
better understand the data and better summarize the project.
Project title: Predictive Dose Response Modeling
Description: The intern will help develop a predictive dose
response modeling approach that facilitates Phase 2 or multiple-dose
safety study(MDSS) clinical trial design and analysis. The
scope of the internship includes mainly literature research, development
of software tools, and simulation to assess the method with existing
methods in practice.
Interested students must apply online at the following website:

Click on Job Search > Job Search. Then select
"Statistical Science" within the Functional Area selection
box. Click once more on the Search box.
Applications for internships are due by January 31,
2008.
