The University of Iceland offers three PhD fellowships under the
direction of faculty members within the Applied Mathematics Division:
* Random effects in statistical multispecies models, under the direction
of Prof. Gunnar Stefansson. The successful candidate will work on
developing nonlinear random effect models and estimation procedures in
the context of multispecies population dynamics in the marine
environment.
* Computational intelligence - adaptive heuristic design, under the
direction of Prof. Thomas Philip Runarsson. The successful candidate
will work on a challenging research project in the area hyperheuristics,
using modern machine learning methods in learning search strategies for
optimization, generalisation and robustness of evolved/learned
strategies.
* Bayesian statistical methods for estimation and spatial prediction of
extreme precipitation applied to precipitation data from Iceland, under
the direction of Associate Research Prof. Birgir Hrafnkelsson. The
successful candidate will work on the development of Bayesian
methodologies for spatial extreme values which will involve the
application of spatial statistics and non-parametic function estimation.
The fellowships will last for three years. Studies should commence in
fall 2008. Each grant will start at ISK 2,300,000 per year to cover
living expenses without taxes, no tuition fees but an annual
registration fee of ISK 45,000 is required by the University of Iceland.
The applicants should possess an M.Sc. degree with a solid background in
computer programming along with mathematics, statistics or engineering
as required for each project. In addition, good verbal and writing
skills in English are required.
The application should contain a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae
including documentation of academic degrees and a minimum of two
references. Applications should be sent as e-mail attachments in PDF
format to Prof. Gunnar Stefansson, gunnar@hi.is (Applied Mathematics
Division, Science Institute. University of Iceland, Dunhagi 5, 107
Reykjavik, Iceland).
The deadline for applications for fall semester, 2008 is April 15.
Appointments to the University of Iceland do take into account the Equal
Rights Project of the University of Iceland.
