The Likelihood Center was established in 1992, coincident with the
Penn State hosting of an IMS Special Topics meeting titled "Variations
on the Likelihood Theme." The Center is led by Bruce Lindsay, with
offices in 422 Thomas Building. The main goal of the Center is the fostering
of a creative and interactive environment for students and faculty who share
common interests in the area of likelihood theory and methods. Research
funding for several students is provided by Professor Lindsay through research
grants from NSF, EPA and NSA.
In addition to providing a common working environment for graduate students, the Center in 1994 started a weekly workshop/class, open to all comers, which has been covering recent topics in statistics that are not found in the curriculum. Students receive one credit for participating and being the group leader for one week's session. The number of participants has ranged from ten to twenty over the least three semesters. Currently, there are eight graduate students involved, five housed in
Room 422. Bing Li, Joe Schafer, and Jim Rosenberger are
faculty members who have regularly participated in the workshop activities.
The Center produces a technical report series. |
