From: Library Learning Services Date: October 27, 2009 2:11:15 PM EDT To: drh20@psu.edu Subject: Course Offering- L ST 301H Dear David Hunter  The need for quality information skills continues to increase.  Students in all disciplines must know how to efficiently locate, evaluate and utilize an increasing number of resources.  These strategies are needed for classes as well as in practice in future careers.  After graduation, in our rapidly changing environment, the state-of-the-art in their discipline will continue to develop and move forward, and they will need to continue to learn and develop with it. For students in the Schreyer’s Honor College, these skills are especially crucial as they prepare their thesis and work with researchers in the laboratory or in the field.  Library Studies 301H, a one credit class offered in the spring semester, is focused on these research skills. The class is a focused exploration of resources in all formats, evaluation of these resources, and an overview of the research and documentation process. While aspects of these may be included in other classes, Library Studies 301H brings the wide range of research skills into critical focus. Students focus on their own research needs in the class. Class examples illustrate the possibilities; assignments are designed to further individual research efforts.  At the end of the class, students should understand the types of resources, be comfortable utilizing those that are available at Penn State, know how to locate those not available locally, understand the underlying search principles so they can transfer this knowledge to their workplace or graduate school, and have a significant start on their honors thesis. I encourage you to consider this class when you are advising your student.  If I can provide additional information or if you or a student would like to discuss this class, please feel free to contact me at bao2@psu.edu or at 865 3697.   Thank you,
