As of today, there is a working Linux box in 330 Thomas running Redhat 7.1!  The only problem is that I used the default 'workstation class' install option which is severely bloated.  I hope to trim the amount of software that is installed so that we are not wasting hard disk space with unused software.

A Linux "info page" written by Petrus Chang.

I added the following to the workstation class install from the Redhat CD's:

Additional software: If you are interested in viewing pdf or ps files using netscape, do the following:
Click on 'Edit' > 'Preferences' and a window will appear.
    Click on 'Navigator' > 'Applications'.
Highlight 'Portable Document Format' and click edit.
Click on the 'application' button and type gv %s
Do the same for postscript files, only highlight 'Postscript Document'.

You can print using the printer in 330 now.  I can set up other printers, but that seems rather useless to me at this point.  The printer, hp4-330, is the default printer and it seems to be working with the lpr command, netscape, xemacs, and some other commands/programs.

Benchmarking results for R-1.2.3 are here!!  Computers used:  Definetti and the Linux box.  Note:  I was remotely logged in to Definetti, so X was not running while it was running on the Linux box.  Both machines have 256 MB RAM, however I am not sure how the processors compare.  The Linux machine has a 1 GH processor.

Click here if you want to see the partitioning scheme used on the hard disk.

Coming soon...hopefully I will get SAS and S-plus installed in the near future.  The plan is to do some benchmarking using R, S-plus, and SAS...it is almost like a heavyweight boxing match: Solaris vs. Linux and R vs. S!  Wow, I can't wait!

In addition, I need to make sure that this thing is secure.  I have no idea what to do though...I'm not a hacker!  HenSiong Tan is trying to find the linux machine as we speak.  I'll keep you posted...
