Title: Heteroscedastic One-Way ANOVA for a Large Number of Levels (A joint work with M. Akritas) Abstract: For the purpose of testing equality of means in the context of one-way layout when the number of levels is large (tends to infinity), we introduce a projection method for quadratic forms, which simplifies the form of the statistics. Applying this method, we improve recent results by Broos and Brownie (1995) and Akritas and Arnold (1999) for the homoscedastic case with the number of observations per level bounded. We also extend these results to the heteroscedastic case, and also to the case where the number of observations per level also tends to infinity. The limiting distribution of the proposed statistics, under local alternatives, is also investigated.
