Class Activity: Sampling Without Replacement - 'Jelly Beans'


Purpose: A large group activity (with individual data collection) that involves having students select jelly beans from a cup in order to investigate the effects of sampling without replacement.

Procedure:

Part I

  1. Put one orange and two yellow jelly beans in the dixie cup that was given to you.
  2. Cover the top of the cup and shake it to mix the jelly beans.
  3. Without looking at the beans, pick a jelly bean out at random and record its color under "Color of First Bean" for "Trial 1" in the table below.  Do not put the bean back in the cup until step 4 is completed.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3.  Record the color of the second bean selected under "Color of Second Bean" for "Trial 1" in the table below.  Put both beans back in the cup.
  5. Now repeat steps 2-4 above for a total of 12 trials.  Record your results in the table below.
Part II
  1. Count the number of times the sequence of colors was 'YY' , 'YO', 'OY'.
  2. Count the number of times you got "Yellow" on the first pick.
  3. Count the number of times you got "Yellow" on the second pick.
