Title: How not to be a statistician! One of the mountaineering classics, "Four against Everest", tells the tale of four climbers from Seattle attempting a new (and, at that time, illegal) route on the North face of Everest back in 1961. In spite of their inexperience at the Himalayan climbing, through sheer perseverance, adaptability and not to a small extent, fortitude, they made it to 23,000 feet and came back alive to tell their tale. My attempt at achieving statistical glory (ha,ha) has many similarities to their attempt on Everest. In this address, I will tell you how mostly luck, and to some extent perseverance and adaptability helped me in my statistical career. Certainly my days at Penn State had a lot to do with my career but my days at the Poona University, Johns Hopkins University, Montana State University and University of Alberta, my current employer, were also instrumental in the way my career has developed. This talk is about my personal journey through the statistical wilderness, glaciers with hidden crevasses, the peaks and the valleys. Hopefully I will be able to convey the sense of joy, excitement and awe I feel towards statistics and mountaineering alike.
